Amy M. Salazar, LMSW, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at Washington State University in the Department of Human Development, and a faculty member of the WSU Prevention Science doctoral program. She is a member of the evaluation team for the National Training and Development Initiative for Foster and Adoptive Parents. Her area of scholarly expertise involves understanding and improving the outcomes of children, youth, and families with or at risk of child welfare system involvement. Dr. Salazar has worked on a variety of federally- and foundation-funded foster care-related research and evaluation projects. She was principal investigator on a two-year developmental research grant funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to develop and examine the feasibility of Fostering Higher Education, a manualized postsecondary access and retention intervention that addresses the critical transition needs of foster youth interested in pursuing higher education. Because of her expertise in the area of foster care and higher education, in December 2017 she was invited to testify at a briefing hosted by the United States Congress’ Congressional and Senate Caucuses on Foster Youth on recommendations for improving postsecondary supports for youth in care. She is project director for the Keeping Families Together Study, an evaluation of an adaptation of the Communities That Care evidence-based community mobilization model that addresses community prevention of child maltreatment and child welfare system involvement. In another project funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, she is working with colleagues to develop and test the usability of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Development: A Guide for Foster Caregivers, a curriculum module for improving the relationships between foster parents and their LGBTQ+ wards. She also served as a Casey Family Programs Doctoral Research Fellow to explore factors that impact college persistence as well as how foster care alumni college graduates are faring post-college compared to their general population counterparts, in addition to performing secondary analysis of data from the Midwest Evaluation of the Adult Functioning of Former Foster Youth at Chapin Hall, University of Chicago to explore trauma, depression, and social support in youth leaving care.
