Accessing the Curriculum

There are four potential options for sites to gain access to NTDC curriculum materials. As part of determining how NTDC will be implemented, sites will need to assess how each option fits with existing structures and/or what work may be needed to develop the structure for professional staff and participants to gain the desired level of access. Each of these options differs in the level of interactivity. In some of the options materials are available for download only, while other options allow for participants to view videos (such as for Online themes and Right-Time themes) and access the Self-Assessment with automated scoring and feedback. Options also have differences in the ability for professional staff to monitor participant course completion.

Descriptions of the four options to access curriculum materials can be found below and include some basic details intended to support sites in identifying which option will best meet the needs of their site.

This Website

The NTDC website supports users in downloading curriculum materials to a local device. The website includes files needed for the Self-Assessment, Classroom-Based and Right-Time trainings. Each of these components is organized by theme and includes all the curriculum materials needed to include resources, Facilitator Classroom Guide, PPTs, handouts, videos, podcasts, etc.

Note: The Self-Assessment files in this location are available as a PDF, not an automated/interactive format. To access the interactive file for the self-assessment, go to CapLEARN or transfer the file to your site’s Learning Management System.

Videos and podcasts that are a part of the Classroom-Based and Right-Time themes cannot be watched/listened to directly from the website, they must be downloaded. The Classroom-Based files, videos and podcasts are large which means that they will be slow to download and you will need a strong connection to the internet.

CapLEARN

CapLEARN is an official website of the United States government and Learning Management System (LMS) that provides access to training, knowledge, and skills to build child welfare capacity through learning. Users can access CapLEARN by visiting https://learn.childwelfare.gov/ and registering to create a CapLEARN account. There is no cost to access or use CapLEARN.

For Participants:

There are three participant sections entitled: Self-Assessment, Classroom Materials for NTDC Participants and Right Time Training for Participants.

The Self-Assessment section allows participants to complete the survey electronically and receive automated results based on their scoring.

The Classroom Materials for Participants allows the user to complete the on-line themes: Expanding Your Parenting Paradigm and the Overview of the Child Welfare System. The section in CapLEARN also allows participants to download the Participant Resource Manuals and review Resources that supplement classroom-based instruction.

The Right Time Training for Participants section allows the user to complete Right Time Training to include: watching videos online, listening to podcasts online, reviewing discussion questions and resources and printing out a certificate that confirms completion of the training.

User information in CapLEARN is confidential. This means course information is not tracked and cannot be accessed by someone other than the user. Users can generate their own certificates of completion for Right-Time themes that they can then download and provide to their agency staff to show proof of course completion.

For Facilitators / Trainers:

The section entitled: Materials for NTDC Facilitators / Trainers includes four sections: Classroom Themes (zip files), Manuals, Evaluation and Self-Assessment (PDF).

Classroom Themes includes all of the materials needed to train the classroom-based themes including: videos, power point slides, podcasts, etc. These materials will be available for downloading only. The Classroom-Based files, videos and podcasts are large which means that they will be slow to download and you will need a strong connection to the internet.

Implementation Manuals are included in the Manual section and available for download.

The evaluation section will include pre and posttests and fidelity forms for each of the classroom-based themes. These documents are optional, but must be downloaded for use.

The Self-Assessment section provides a copy of the self-assessment survey and the scoring guide, allowing facilitators to use the paper version of the survey if desired.

Note: Spaulding does not manage CapLEARN, and cannot provide technical support for CapLEARN system. Users are encouraged to use the CapLEARN help desk for technical support if needed.

Agency Learning Management System

Upon request, sites can be provided with all curriculum files for import into their own Learning Management System (LMS).

Interactive course materials were developed using Moodle LMS which is a free software. If the agency is currently using Moodle as their LMS they will be able to directly import it into their site if their Moodle software version is 3.6 and above. Agencies can also download online/interactive curriculum components in SCORM compliant formats that can be modified or directly placed into their LMS.

The agency will need to have tech support who can ensure the files are appropriately downloaded and configured for their LMS. Spaulding will offer limited consultation to assist agencies with this transfer.

Spaulding Portal

For sites interested in providing interactive access to their participants, but do not want to use CapLEARN or do not have their own Learning Management System, Spaulding for Children will host and fully manage an interactive system.

This would include the following:

24/7 access to training content,
mobile friendly access to the courses,
tracking of participants’ progress and attendance,
report generation,
training of staff on the registration process, accessing reports and some course development processes,
access to online support, and
system maintenance.
